Robert Glenn “Bob” Helwig, age 85 of Cochrane passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Bluff View Memory Care, Holmen. He was born on February 26, 1932 in the Town of Montana to Charles and Hilda (Schultz) Helwig. Bob grew up on the family farm. He began work at LaCrosse Milling Company in 1962, where he was employed for 34 years, retiring in 1996. Bob was married to Barbara Giertz on March 24, 1962 at Dr. Martin Luther Church, Buffalo City. He had a strong work ethic and could be counted on to lend a hand whenever he was needed. Bob was a man of few words, but could be trusted by his word. During his younger years, he enjoyed deer hunting, snowmobiling, cutting wood, car races and tractor rides. He was a proud collector of Farmall Tractors. Bob helped out on his brother, Orv’s farm when he could.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barb; two daughters, Laurie Helwig (Len Urban) and Julie Quinn; grandchildren, Jaedyn and Carter Quinn; brothers, Ron (Edith), Ken and Orv (Goldene); sisters, Marge (Lyle) Bloom and Shirley (Roger) Olsen; sisters-in-law, Marlys Helwig, Delores Helwig and Rita Helwig; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Clara; brothers, Loren, Dale and Vilas and mother and father-in-law, Henry and Etta Giertz and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charlie and Iva Brownell.
A funeral service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, Cochrane on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at 1:00 pm with Pastor Mark Wilde officiating. Burial to immediately follow at Buffalo City Cemetery. A visitation will be held at church on Wednesday from 11:00 am until the time of service. In honor of Bob and his love of red tractors, please feel free to wear something red.
