H. Gregory Green

H. Gregory Green, age 89, of Alma, passed away peacefully and gracefully on Tuesday, November 6, 2023 at his home in Alma while under the care and compassion of St. Croix Hospice.

He was born on December 8, 1933 to Harvey and Wilhelmina Green

On December 6, 1980, Greg was united in marriage to Charlotte Maule.

After graduating from high school in Fall Creek, WI, Greg continued his education at the University of WI in Eau Claire where he played on the varsity basketball team.  His sisters attributed his finesse and jumping skills to his ballet training as a young child.  It was not his choice.  His sisters wanted to take ballet, and one more dancer gave his Mom, a reduced rate.

After graduation, Greg was offered several teaching positions, one of them located in Alma, WI.  Google maps were not available then, and a construction worker helped him locate the town where he began a teaching career that lasted for 28 years.  He was the entire Math Department and also taught drivers education, history, and coached basketball, baseball and football.  A highlight of his career was when he took his basketball team to the State Tournament in 1966.  Sports writers referred to Alma as "The Small School with a Big Heart".  They almost beat Milwaukee Lincoln and came away with a 3rd place finish and the Sportsmanship Award.

Greg’s community involvement included serving on the Alma Ambulance and Alma City Council.

In 1985 Greg and his wife moved to River Falls where he continued to coach and teach.  In 1991, Greg was inducted into the Wisconsin High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.   Somehow, while working part time for Tri-State Construction during his summer breaks, he managed to earn his Master’s Degree.  Greg exemplified all that is good about growing up, working and living in a small town.  He and his wife entertained

many deer hunters at their hobby farm where tall tales and stories were shared.  He was an exceptional mentor of young people and cherished the letters he received from former students.  Greg was always an educator first and that is how he would like to be remembered.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte; children, Amy (Dave) Dick, Gregory (Kathy) Green, Victoria (Roger) Petty, William Green and Stephanie Schafer; 8 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; siblings, Yvonne Melville, Nancy Blomlie and Virgil Green; also by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Besides his parents, Greg was preceded in death by his son, Theodore Green and brother, Roger Green.
