Frederick William Linse, Jr.

Frederick “Walt” Linse Jr., age 71, passed away peacefully at home on February 27, 2026, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.

Fred was born on December 1, 1954 in Durand, WI to Frederick and Joyce (Reinhardt) Linse. He graduated from Alma High School with the Class of 1972 and served his country in the United States Navy prior to receiving an honorable discharge.

On October 1, 1977, Fred married Sandra Schroeder and to this union three children were born: Mickenzie, Deedra, and Tanner. Though Fred and Sandra later divorced, he remained a devoted father and grandfather throughout his life.

Fred was a man of many talents and deep-rooted passions. As a young boy, he spent many hours outdoors, especially enjoying squirrel hunting and farm life. He worked as a hired hand for local farmers before establishing his own dairy farm. After selling his dairy herd in the 1990’s, he continued raising beef cattle, never straying far from the land he loved. Fred was not one to sit still – he was always in the midst of a project or lending a helping hand to someone in need.

A gifted craftsman, Fred operated his own sawmill, supplying tongue-and-groove pine car siding to many in the area. He built countless cabins throughout the state, leaving behind a legacy of quality workmanship and care. Above all, he cherished the special moments with his family – especially at gun deer camp, fishing trips, and just being outdoors.

Fred worked for Buffalo County Highway Department and later for the Town of Nelson, where he was known for his strong work ethic and friendly spirit.

In his later years, Fred took great pride in tending to his impressive garden. He delighted in sharing his bounty of sweet corn and raspberries with family and friends. His homemade raspberry syrup drizzled over ice cream, along with his raspberry jam will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.

Fred will be deeply missed by his children, Micki (Eric) Spacek, Deedra (Tom) Schmit and Tanner Linse; his grandchildren, Waylon, Oaklee and Avery Spacek, and Clara and Clayton Schmit; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette (Bob) Thompson, Kathy (Gary) Raabel, Cheri (Michael) Tucker, and Lori (Paul) Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents; and his siblings, Diane Rau, Darlene Stair, Bill Linse, and Baby Alvin.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2026 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at the Silver Moon in Alma.

Fred’s happy-go-lucky demeanor, unwavering work ethic, and genuine kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
