Evelyn A. Maassen, age 91, of Alma, WI passed away on Sunday, November 24 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.
She was born on September 20, 1922 in Faulkton, SD the first daughter of Clarence and Ella (Nipp) Glanzmam. She attended Onaka High School, Onaka, SD and graduated with the class of 1940. After high school, during WW II, she lived with and aunt and uncle in Davenport, IA, and worked at a defense plant.
She married Donald Maassen, of Alma, WI on December 30, 1943 at St. Paul Lutheran Parsonage in the Town of Canton, Buffalo County. They lived and farmed with his parents until 1953, when they moved to Rochester, MN. Evelyn worked at Montgomery Ward until 1962. They then moved to a hobby farm near Waumandee, WI. She was employed at the Waumandee State Bank for twenty years. After retirement they moved to Cochrane to be closer to the Mississippi River. In 1996 they moved to Rivers edge apartments in Alma, WI. Evelyn had many fond memories of traveling on the 22 bus tour trips she took with her husband throughout the United States. Evelyn lovingly cared for her husband after his eyesight failed in 1988 until his death on September 7, 2008. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and active with the W-ELCA. Evelyn enjoyed participating in activities at the Alma Senior Center such as playing cards, bingo and the fellowship with her friends.
She is survived by her two sisters, Joyce Arnold and Elaine Thelen, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers Lowell and Gordon, sister Arlene, a niece Darlene, and in laws Claus and Marie Maassen. A visitation and funeral service will be at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma, WI on Tuesday November 26 at 12:00 PM until the time of service at 1:00PM Burial will be at Nelson Cemetery, Nelson, WI.
