Edward Leroy Schultz died on Saturday, October 18,2025 at home under the care of St. Croix Hospice after a long battle with cancer with his nephew by his side.
Born the youngest child of Fred H. and Anna (Eide) Schultz on February 22, 1936 on the old Schultz Farm, which is now Fichtenbauer Road in the Town of Canton, Buffalo County. In 1939, the family moved up on the Senn Bluff and then later over to the Eide Bluff.
Then, in 1944, They moved to the farm he has resided on for 81 years in Thompson Valley.
He was a lifelong member of the Thompson Valley Church and was confirmed there in 1950. The church was destroyed in fire in 1978 and is now the Valley of the Shepherd Lutheran Church.
He attended schools in Tiffany Valley, Thompson Valley, and Canton. He was a 1955 Graduate of Mondovi High School. After graduation, he helped out on the family farm until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in October of 1958 during President Eisenhower’s Administration. He completed his Basic Training at Fort Carson in Colorado, followed by an additional eight weeks of training at Fort Chaffee in Arkansas.
In March 1959, Schultz was deployed to Baumholder, Germany, where he served for eighteen months with the 8th Infantry Division. He returned to the United States aboard the U.S.N.S. Geiger in October 1960.
After his active duty, Schultz served with the National Guard from 1961 to 1962. He was a member of the 128th Infantry Regiment of the 32nd Infantry Division (also known as the “Red Arrow” Division) and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. During this time, he was called to serve in response to the Berlin Crisis, holding the rank of Specialist 4th Class (E-4). He was a member of the American Legion in Mondovi.
He was a dairy farmer for most of his life until health problems caused him to retire. He enjoyed fishing, dart ball, and bowling. He was a great softball player in his younger years. He was an avid sports fan with his favorite teams being the Milwaukee Brewers, Milwaukee Bucks and the Green Bay Packers. He loved to play pool with the old timer’s pool league on Tuesdays and Thursdays and enjoyed going to Senior Meals at Donna Mae’s until his health worsened and he was no longer able to attend.
He is survived by his sister, Phyllis Ede-Hovey, nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Fred and Anna Schultz, Sisters: Mildred (Doyle Rud & Oakley Schneider), and Anna Mae (A.J. Eide). Brother: Norman (Janice) Schultz. Brother-in-laws: Roger Ede and Joseph Hovey. Nieces and Nephew: Sandra Ede, Randy Eide, Judy Peterson, and Jackie Jo Rud.
A very special thanks to Tessa, Mykah, Nikki, Brooke, Tara, Jacob and all the staff at St. Croix Hospice. Also, special thanks to his good friend and old neighbor, Lennie Odegard for his faithful and weekly visits and all who came to visit and call him during his illness.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 30, 2025 at the Valley of Shepherd Lutheran Church with Mike Isaacson and Jacob Bilicke officiating. There will be an hour of visitation prior to the service. Following the service, he will be laid to rest overlooking the farm at the Thompson Valley Cemetery.
