Dorothy Urness

Dorothy Ann Urness, 85, passed away on January 13 in the arms of her loving husband at home.

She was born on October 10, 1938, at home on the Kent Farm in Modena.  She was the daughter of Edward and Tena (Becker) Stamm.

Attended grade school in Modena and graduated from Mondovi High School in1956.  After high school she attended Winona Nursing School in 1957-1958 to become an LPN.  She worked as an LPN at Sacred Heart Hospital downtown Eau Claire.

On April 12, 1958, she married LaVerne Urness at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Modena.  They celebrated 65 years of marriage in 2023.

They lived in Eau Claire for 12 years.  In 1970 they purchased the farm in Gilman Valley.  During this time, they raised their three children.  Then in 1992 they sold their farm and moved to a home in Naples Township.

Since 1970 50 plus foster children were cared for by Dorothy.  Some came as young as 3 days old to age 17. They stayed a night, a week, a month or years.  After farming she embroidered for MBC Sports until they closed. Then she went to work at Something Old and Something New in Foster, WI. When that closed she followed the owners to the Quilt Yard in Osseo, sewing and crafting for them.  On weekends they attended Flea Markets and Craft Shows selling their projects.

Dorothy enjoyed sewing.  She made many dresses for Cindy and Karon along with wedding and bridesmaid dresses for special people.    Two special projects were baby blankets for each of the Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren and then as each Grandchild got married a special quilt was made for each.  Aprons were made for Diane Heike’s collection.  Her talents led her to make many banners, paraments, Pastor’s stoles and quilts for Zion Lutheran Church.

In her younger years her father taught her to deer hunt, then she passed that talent to Alan. They were successful in getting a couple of does, but she missed a big buck on the farm.

She had a passion for collecting family history for her and LaVerne’s family.

The family enjoyed many decorated cakes, fresh homemade bread, graham cracker treats and playing cards and putting puzzles together.

She is preceded in death by her parents (Edward and Tena Stamm), brothers LaMoine Stamm and Francis Stamm.

She is survived by her husband, LaVerne and 3 children, Cindy (Dennis) Ring, Alan (Angie) Urness and Karon (Doug) Olson all of Mondovi.

Nine Grandchildren:  Paul (Nicole) Ring, Rebecca (Cory) Teigen, Rachel (Tony) Hoffman, Brian Ring, Jena (Michael) Johnson, Brooke (Chad) Peterson, Amanda (Nathan) Weiss, Bridgette (Kyle) Brantner and Christina Olson (friend – Russell).
