Darrell W. Gross

Darrell W. Gross, age 77 of the Town of Alma, WI passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN on Thursday morning, February 6, 2014. He was born on May 10, 1936 and was the son of Waldemar and Alma (Thoeny) Gross. He was born at the Tell store operated by his grandparents and was Dr. Max Bacchuber’s first Alma baby. Darrell graduated from Alma high school with the class of 1954. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force. He drove Semi out to the east coast delivering fish for Pepin Fisheries. Darrell enrolled in the Wisconsin State College, Eau Claire before transferring to UW Madison School of Pharmacy. Upon graduation, he interned at Gundersen Clinic Pharmacy and was also employed by Harold McEuen at Service Drugs in Onalaska. He met Alana Quinn while working at Gundersen Pharmacy and they soon married on September 3, 1966. One year later, Darrell and Alana welcomed their daughter, Cheryl into their lives. In 1972, they purchased the drug store in downtown Alma and continued until his health forced retirement in 2007. Over the years, Darrell was a member of The Alma Business Club, Alma Lions, Alma Legion Post 224, Buffalo County Housing Authority and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Alma. Darrell’s relaxation away from the Pharmacy was cutting and splitting wood, plowing snow and mowing his lawn. His family always was his top priority, even with the business demands. We were so thankful to have had him in our lives. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Don and Vera St. Jacque, infant baby sister, Darlene, and sister-in-law, Judy Kruckow.
