Carmela Burmeister, age 100, of Buffalo City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at the Roger Metz Manor in Winona.
She was born on November 20, 1923 in Mount Kisco, NY the daughter of the late Nicola and Filomena (Perna) Testa.
On June 14, 1947 Carmela was united in marriage to Adolph “Red” Burmeister in Mount Kisco, NY. To this loving union, three children were born. Red preceded Carmela in death in 2007.
While living in Mount Kisco, Carmela worked at the Bayonne, New Jersey Army Base during WW II.
After Relocating to her husband’s home town of Buffalo City, Carmela was employed at the Winona Knitting Mills and later, she began working at the Cochrane-Fountain City Schools as a cook. Carmela and her husband took pride in raising their three children, Bette, Gary and Barbara alongside many Burmeister family relatives.
She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Alma and was part of the church Study Club and was an active member and President of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post 10406 in Cochrane. Carmela also was a 4-H and Girl Scout leader.
After retirement, she and Red enjoyed many winters in the Florida Keys with family and friends.
So many friendships and joined activities created her wonderful life and the cherished memories of friends and family which are what will sustain all those who survive.
Carmela will be sadly missed by her children, Bette (John) Grable, Gary Burmeister (Jesus Nevarez), Barbara Glissendorf and former son in law, Robert Glissendorf; grandchildren, Andrea (Steve) Johnston, Adam Grable and Roy Glissendorf; great grandchildren, Abe and Wil Grable, Ian Johnston, Jerrild Kreher, Wyatt Kreher, Charles and Eleanor Glissendorf; Sister, Leanore Testa; Brother, Michael (Gayle) Testa along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
Besides her parents and beloved husband, Adolph “Red” Burmeister, Carmela was preceded in death by Sisters, Marie, Antoinette, Adeline and also by an infant sister. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Lawrence Catholic Church on Thursday February 15, 2024 at 11:00 AM with a visitation at 10:00 AM until the time of Mass. Burial will be at Buffalo City Cemetery
