Shirl Ian Averbeck

Shirl Ian Averbeck, age 75 of Cochrane, WI passed away peacefully while surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, June 30, 2013. He was born on January 12, 1938 in Winona to Edward and Luella (Korb) Averbeck. Shirl went to grade school at Rose Valley School before he attended and graduated from Cochrane High School with the class of 1956. On November 19, 1960 Shirl was united in marriage to Marlene Rothering at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fountain city, and to this union, four children were born. In 1956, just after his high school graduation, Shirl began a career as a mechanic with A.H. Rohrer Garage and later with Paul Busch in Wabasha and after 49 years of dedicated service, Shirl retired in 2005. Shirl also will be remembered by the community for the years he worked for the BBC Recycling Center and part time for the Town of Belvidere helping with the lawn mowing, road maintenance and brush clearing. He will be remembered for his love of Chevrolet Automobiles, Simplicity lawn mowers, Farmall tractors and Gehl implements. Shirl found great enjoyment helping his brother on his farm located just across the highway from his own home where he and his wife Marlene have been for 53 years. He had a knack to strike up conversation with most anyone and be able to spend just a few moments to talk. His true attribute was the love for his family. He took great pride in all the accomplishments his children made and since the day he became a grandpa, he devoted his love and heart to being with them to see their accomplishments as well. He was a devoted husband, father and grandpa. Shirl will be deeply missed by his wife of the past 53 years, Marlene of Cochrane; his children, Greg (Tammy) of Fountain City, Lonnie (his significant other, Karen) Averbeck of Goodview, MN, Rob (Gail) Averbeck of Lewiston and Susan Cyert of Cochrane; five grandchildren, Joshua (Jamie) Averbeck, Katelyn (fiancé’ Corey) Averbeck, Colton Averbeck, Maria Averbeck and Allison Averbeck and one niece, Julene (Tom). Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Kenneth, sister in law Jean Averbeck, and son in law James Cyert. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 3 at 10:30 AM at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Alma with Rev. Brian J. Jazdzewski as celebrant. Burial will follow at Buffalo City Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 2 at the Talbot Family Funeral Home, Alma Chapel from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
