Larry "Slim" Johnston

Larry D. “Slim” Johnston, age 74 of Mondovi, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, June 6, 2018. He was born on May 22, 1944 in Mondovi, the son of Ray and Harriet (Hurtley) Johnston. Larry married Linda L. Crawford on March 12, 1966 in Bloomer and to this union two children were born. He was an active member of Our Savior United Methodist Church and served on the church council and was captain of the Dart Ball league. Larry was in the National Guard for 6 years and a member of the American Legion. He owned a cattle truck and a milk truck for about 4 years and then farmed for over 15 years. He also drove truck for Menards. Larry recently was employed at Durand Sanitation until his retirement. Larry was a club Leader for Lucky 16/4-H for over 25 years and was president of the Harvey Cousin for around 20 years. If something was broken, Larry was the guy to fix it. If he didn’t know how to fix it, he would dismantle it down to its basics and figure out how to. Larry was always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved to travel and Larry’s motto was you can never get lost driving around…just keep making left hand turns and you’ll get back to where you started. Larry loved rodeos and Bluegrass/Gospel music and enjoyed helping with the River Valley Bluegrass Festival. He especially loved horses. He and Linda enjoyed their hobby farm, tending to their sheep and mini horses. He had a sweet tooth and was a bit of a jokester. Larry believed in traditions and lived his life in those deep rooted beliefs. Larry was devoted to his family and loved spending time with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. Larry will be sadly missed by his wife of 52 years, Linda; children, Lisa Bishopp (significant other, Jon Johnson) of Mondovi and LaMonte Johnston of Arcadia; grandchildren, Boe (Fabiola) Bishopp of Mondovi, Kyle (Tosha) Bishopp of Eleva and Tyler (Kristin) Bishopp of Mondovi; great-grandchildren, Nick Bishopp, Alana Bishopp, Memphis Bishopp, Nathaniel Bishopp, Hunter Bishopp, Sylous Bishopp and Sterling Bishopp; siblings, Jerry Johnston, Ray (Laurie) Johnston and Jackie Spoo all of Mondovi; brother-in-law, Dick (Marilyn) Crawford of New Auburn; sisters-in-law, Susan (Mike) Fischer of Sheboygan and Donna (Ray) Moeller of Eau Claire; former son-in-law, Donald J. Bishopp, Jr.; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Howard Johnston; sister-in-law, Linda M. Johnston and brothers-in-law, Roy Crawford and Glen Crawford. A memorial service will be held at Our Saviors United Methodist Church on Monday, June 11, 2018 at 11:00 am with Pastor Claire Mather officiating. Inurnment to immediately follow at Oak Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held at Talbot Family Funeral Homes, Mondovi Chapel on Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm and then again at church on Monday from 10:00 am until the time of service.
