Eva Frances Hammer age 94 of Cochrane, WI died February 17, 2013 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse. Eva came into this world on May 28, 1918, the daughter of Roy and Ida (Lowenhagen) Mahlman in Fayette, ND. Her parents eventually moved the family to the Cochrane area. Eva attended and graduated from the Cochrane High school in 1936. One day when Eva was at the little Cochrane grocery store, a young man working there insisted on carrying her groceries for her, this young man became her lifelong companion and soon to be husband. Eva married Marvin Hammer on February 24, 1938 at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church parsonage. Eva and Marvin moved to a home in Cochrane, were Eva still lived to this day. Together they were blessed with five children. Besides being a busy mother, Eva would do cleaning jobs for various local business and homes. She was a long time active member the St. Lawrence PCCW. It was not till her youngest daughter was older that she began working at Wincraft in Winona. She was a dedicated employee for over 25 years until she retired. Eva loved gardening, and handy crafts, such as knitting and crochet. She was known as an accomplished seamstress, often making intricate Barbie doll clothes. Eva enjoyed cooking for her family, always welcoming all who visited with a good meal. She also ventured with friends on many of bus trips going to various venues. She enjoyed playing cards as well, especially Canasta and 500, belonging to a card club that would meet every week. Eva's daughters fondly thought of how mom always insisted on treating them to lunch after her doctor’s appointments. . She had a true love and devotion for her children and many grand and great grandchildren. Eva will be sadly missed by her son Merlin (Kate) Hammer; her daughters Emily Brommer, Goldene (Orville) Helwig, Marie (Duane) Hund; her sister Inez Muszynski; 28 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Marvin, her daughter Sandra Hammer, brother John, sister Annabell Becker, son in law Glen Brommer, and 2 great grandchildren. A mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Alma on Wednesday February 20 at 12:00PM, with a visitation from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Father Brian Jazdzewski will officiate. Burial will follow at Buffalo City Cemetery. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.talbotfuneralhomes.com.
