Richard Garlick

Richard Garlick, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at Sugar Loaf Senior Living in Winona, MN. A graduate of West Point in 1958. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 11:00 am at Talbot Family Funeral Homes - Alma Chapel with a visitation one hour prior to. From his daughter-in-law, Cindy Garlick, His smile was often, his laugh was contagious, and his support was never wavering. He was passionate about his family, his country, and The Dallas Cowboys. A lover of music there wasn't a tune he couldn't carry or a drum set he didn't like . A man who wore many hats, and went by many titles to Aj and I he was Grandpa Rich! When his son Jim died in 2013, he didn't hesitate to take his grandson under his wing. He would share stories with Aj to keep him engaged in the game of life! He loved to hear of Aj's accomplishments and was most proud when Aj chose to attend Bridgewater College in Harrisonburg Virginia! Now a junior Aj is thriving. Being our life jacket was something he did best. A trait we feel was learned from his brotherhood at West Point. Although he is no longer with us we know that he is overjoyed to be once again with his devoted wife of 50+ years, Pat, and his son, Jim. Their life jacket will keep us afloat forever! I guess one could say hope floats! We love you Rich and, as always, Thank you for your Service! From his grandson, AJ, From West Point to Vietnam soldiers heard the words cover, medic, and HOOAH. My Grandfather, Colonel Richard Garlick, knew them all to well. He was a man dedicated to two things in life, his service and his family. Growing up, my grandfather was always cheerful, supportive, and witty. He always knew how to keep our spirits up in hard times. When I think back to what my father used to tell me before school in the mornings, "Be respectful today," it never really occurred to me what the true deep meaning of that comment was. My Father, Jim Garlick, was taught as a young man to always move forward in life and never look back on the negatives. My Grandfather Richard, my Grandmother Patricia, and my Father Jim were the spitting image of that. They always had a smile on their face. They all cared for their families with unreal amounts of generosity and kindness. They always were giving, and put themselves before others. When my father Jim passed away in 2013, my grandfather reached out to my mother and I and offered as much as he could give. Seeing what my grandfather did for us during that difficult period of my life really showed me the true meaning of what it was like to be respectful and how to carry the Garlick name with honor. I am proud to have had the years that I did with them on this earth. I am proud to be called a Garlick and carry on the name for the rest of my life. Rest In Peace Grandpa Garlick, we love you
